No UNSC Action against Iranian Protests

The United States of America has failed to get any action, on the part of the United Nations Security Council, with respect to the continuous demonstrations, being carried out in Iran against the economic hardships.

While determining the question regarding the appropriate action, the Council expressed grave concerns regarding the fact whether it even was the appropriate authority to take an action in the matter in issue which appeared to be the matter relating to the internal affairs of the state.

The demonstrations against economic hardships began on December 28 in Mashad and spread to other places. According to the statements of the Assistant Secretary-General Taye-Brook Zerihoun, more than 20 Iranians died during the protests, while over 1,000 protesters were detained.

The motion,, moved at the request of Washington by the Permanent Representative of the United States, Nikki Haley, sought to pledge solidarity with the Iranian protesters and thus condemned the Tehran government for suppressing them.

However, the said motion was vetoed by the council, after it stated that “It is up to the Iranians, and to the Iranians alone, to pursue the path of peaceful dialogue, a dialogue based on full respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Iranian people,” French Ambassador Francois Delattre also stated that “However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute, per se, a threat to international peace and security.”

Further, the Russian ambassador, who had also vetoed the motion, stated that Iran should itself deal with the internal problems and the United States should not raise the motion on a “bogus pretext”.
